Small to medium sized 4.0cm to 8.0cm, dark red-purple flowers with a hint of a mauve bar and prey-purple anthers on greenish filaments from early-summer to early-autumn.  A member of the vitecella group of clematis it is a hardy and reliable variety. It can be trained to grow into shrubs, trees and climbing roses as the clematis growth is removed each year.

Raised by Francisque Morel of France and introduced around 1939 it has received the Royal Horticultural Society's 'Award of garden Merit' in 1993.
