An old favourite raised in Germany by L. Spath in 1891, 'Elsa Spath' will be covered in masses of 15.0 to 17.0cm, single, deep violet-blue flowers from early to mid-summer with a second flush in early-autumn. The flowers open a deep violet-blue and mature to a mid-blue with a slightly paler bar. The six to eight, broadly overlapping tepals have slightly undulating margins tapering to pointed tips. The stamens have white filaments with wine-red anthers.
