A majestic clematis producing large, deep-purple flowers with a central tuft of dark anthers and green filaments from spring through autumn on a vigorous vine growing 2.5 to 3.0m in height. The name, which literally means "Edo purple" (Edo being the former capital of Japan), suggests a majestic or imperial purple.
