A vivid mass display of large 10.0 to 15.0cm, rich red-purple flowers with a redder bar and a central boss of yellow to brown anthers with a red-purple connective from spring through autumn. The original plant came from a batch of seeds given to Jackman's nursery in Woking, UK. It was named by Roland Jackman after Ernest Markham, William Robinson's Head Gardener at Gravetye Manor in Sussex. Markham was himself the author of books on clematis.
Recipient of the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society 'Award of Garden Merit' for its outstanding qualities.
